Project 500 launched to support girls rugby
Calling all secondary schools in Bedfordshire!
Maddy’s Mark and Bedford Blues Foundation have joined forces to launch an ambitious new initiative: Project 500. This groundbreaking programme aims to get 500 girls across Bedford playing rugby, using the momentum of the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup to inspire a new generation of female players.
The initiative comes at a crucial time, as women’s rugby continues to grow on the global stage. The 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup has ignited a surge of interest in the sport, and Project 500 aims to transform that inspiration into real world opportunities, ensuring girls across Bedford feel they belong in rugby.
With plans for school-based coaching and rugby festivals, Project 500 is set to be a visible and lasting presence in the community and support the transition into girls' rugby at Bedford Junior Blues. Ensuring girls have a sustainable opportunity to continue playing rugby locally.
“We want every girl in Bedford to feel like rugby is a sport that welcomes her,” said Simon Lawrence, Founder of Maddy’s Mark. “Whether she’s chasing big dreams or just looking for something fun, rugby offers a space to grow stronger physically and mentally.”
Founded in memory of Maddy Lawrence, a passionate young rugby player who inspired everyone around her, Maddy’s Mark champions the values of kindness, courage, and community. Partnering with Bedford Blues Foundation, whose deep roots in youth sport and education have changed lives across the borough, ensures Project 500 has both heart and structure.
“With the world cup coming to England in August, this is a fantastic time to get involved in rugby and hopefully be inspired by the teams on the pitch,” said a project lead Edd Rhodes, Senior Rugby Development Officer. “Project 500 is about giving girls the tools and the confidence, to take on challenges, support each other, and believe in themselves.”
Project 500 isn’t just a number, it’s a movement. With the shared mission of Maddy’s Mark and the Bedford Blues Foundation, and the inspiration of the Women’s Rugby World Cup behind it, the project is set to change lives, on and off the field.
